The Story begins:
What good is starting from the beginning, when can a person ever begin to describe them self, what do you say to show someone your perspective, your take of your own history...perspectives will vary from eye to eye even when based upon the same facts.
I'd say the beginning would have to start about here, now, the events that eventually brought you to read this biography...yes...I believe this is where we should begin.
My pen name is Dennis Paul, my family name was omitted to spare them any embarrassment should I flop squarely on my face. Many know who I am and know me as many things, most of it is good...but I'm only human...
Several years back, I realized time was flying by and I was not on track to complete a set of goals I had set as a teenager. As a general rule I like to keep my word, it means a lot to me to do so, not always possible, not always done but as best I can. My list was as follows: Write and record an album by the age of forty, write a novel by the age of fifty and build a proto-type that will make generating stations and transmission lines a thing of the past.
Fast approaching forty, I put pen to paper, an album was in the making. A problem though, I hadn't sang since I was a young man, my voice had changed and I really didn't find my range until "My World" was recorded, that was near the completion of the album "Rockin the Hut". The early stuff was pretty nasty as I started using an instrument mike, that make the vocals sound even worse than they were. "Sheep dog Eyes", is an example of that. Then I got a cheap unidirectional mike, no matter what I did I couldn't get that cursed echo out, sounded like I was singing through a toilet roll tube. After doing "My World" I bought a new vocal mike, every little nuance, every little vibration, nice...
Well, I did "Rockin the Hut - 2004", I wasn't satisfied with the whole thing, the last four songs done with the new mike were good, but the rest were too grating to live with. I wanted something to be proud of. I dropped six songs from the album list, five originals were kept and the rest had the vocal tracks stripped and re-recorded with two songs being completely re-written and re-recorded in their entirety.
A proud moment was completing the album "Etched in Rock" in the nick of time...back on track again...not so proud...no major label in Canada would pick it up, got to be in the early, early twenties for them to even look you over, the music doesn't matter...
The reality was simple, I had actually exceeded all my personal expectations by that point already. Don't matter who likes it 'cause I created something my family and friends can remember me by long after I'm gone...
Encouraged by the fact there were people who "liked the album", I decided to publish independently. So here we are...well, no, not quite...as I was challenged into a second album, not one to back down, the juices were flowing, and with the experiences learned, I am quite pleased to bring to you, "Hold On".
To this exact very moment, to this very point, to this web site, all art work, recordings, writing and publication work have been done by yours truly. It's quite the interesting experience and process, I can grant you that.
There is a biography out there already, it's really kinda puffy, I get a little embarrassed reading it...oh well, guess I should have had it done differently.
The other goals are being tended to, collecting ideas for the novel, thinking of finishing my bachelors degree...not that it means squat, but I have written three different types of IQ test with an average score of 136 on record...that doesn't mean, nor do I believe that, I'm any smarter than anyone...this just means I'm well rounded in all of the testable fields, that's all...jack of all trades...master of none...you know.
Some of my other talents include, electronics, computers and programming, carpentry, mechanics, drafting, sketching, painting, designing and engineering, inventing gizmo's, sports, martial arts, chess, teaching, the list goes on, the list is backed up with credits and/or certificates in a wide range of fields...only because of a personal need to learn and improve myself and my perception of personal accomplishment, not for any form of damn bragging rights.
I am well read, have a wife and three daughters, a house, a 4x4 truck and I've worked the last 21 plus years at Campbell Mine. Lots of great friends...
Hope I didn't bore you to tears, especially from those of laughter, but that's it, that's all...
Dennis Paul
